Once considered a quiet backwater, Hong Kong’s Kennedy Town is now the place to head for a friendly, buzzing scene. Here’s our neighbourhood guide to this laid back slice of Hong Kong.
Known for its wholesale markets, Hong Kong’s Kennedy Town was once a quiet, low rise backwater along Hong Kong’s harbourfront. Today, it may be the last stop on the MTR line, but it’s often the first spot to visit for those looking for great food and a quiet night out with its appealing mix of the old and new and its taste of old world Hong Kong still to be felt in its matrix of tranquil, neighbourly streets. Just steps away from the Hive, K-Town’s food scene is thriving with taco joints, Australian brunch spots, dim sum havens and places for a post-work sundowner or two. Read on to discover your new favourite hangouts in this insider’s guide to Kennedy Town.

Alvy’s is the answer to most of our prayers – serving stone oven pizzas with fresh locally brewed beers using an east-meets-west approach – think latkes (potato pancakes) with char siu (roast pork). Their sourdough base pizzas are airy and crispy with just the right amount of chewy – a match made in heaven with a Young Master Classic Pale Ale. If that’s not enticing enough, maybe ‘The Big Red Bitch’ – their red brick pizza oven – is an indication of how much fun you’ll have here.
Insider Tip: Alvy’s Milk Tea Panna Cotta, drenched in black and white condensed milk, is a dream come true.

Sitting on the slopes of Kennedy Town is this fuss-free street-food chain hailing from Taiwan. Have a taste of its braised pork steamed buns or signature fatty minced pork on rice, and you’ll understand why they have such a large fan base back at home. Staying true to its roots, the eatery’s exterior and interior decor look like a page plucked out of a Taiwanese night market. Come after lunch and before dinner to avoid the long queue.
Insider Tip: The Taiwanese glutinous rice balls – take it from us, you will not regret them!

A local dim sum legend, Sun Hing Restaurant is easy to miss with its inconspicuous window proudly covered in newspaper clippings boasting of their well-deserved recognition. Some fans go as early (or late) as 2:30 am to satisfy their salted egg custard bun cravings.
Insider Tip: Be prepared to wait and share a table, the compact 60-seat eatery draws a crowd. Or, take your food to go and enjoy it by the harbour.

Get ready for a wild night out surrounded by kitsch and cocktails at this birdcage adorned night spot with an old world Chinese feel to it. To join the party, you’ll have to look for the ‘secret’ black door hidden away on Forbes Street – and no, there’s no flashy ‘Missy Ho’s’ signage on the exterior. Take advantage of the ‘buy-one-get-one-free’ deal on Tuesdays because two Bloody Ho’s definitely sound better than one. And, before you leave, fill up with some Sesame Satay Beef and Miso Cod Tacos.
